Plastic Surgery Spending in U.S. dips 3 percent in 2009

Added By admin on April 28th, 2010

04.28.2010 – As many Americans have been affected by the recession, cosmetic plastic surgery procedures dipped 3 percent from 2008, as only $10 billion USD were spent on plastic surgery procedures in 2009, according to new data.

All of the most popular procedures suffered declines such as breast augmentations, nose jobs, liposuction, tummy tucks, and eyelid surgery. Liposuction procedures experienced the largest decline, according to the latest figures by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS).

The top five cosmetic plastic surgery procedures in 2009 were breast augmentation, which was down 6 percent; nose job (rhinoplasty), down 8 percent; eyelid surgery, down 8 percent; liposuction, down 19 percent; and the tummy tuck (abdominoplasty), which was down 5 percent.

There were about 210,000 cosmetic plastic surgery procedures done on teenagers between the ages of 13 and 19, which made up just about 2 percent of the procedures in 2009, according to the reported data. The most popular surgeries amongst the teenage group was nose jobs (nose reshaping), breast reduction in boys (a surgery used to correct a condition called, Gynecomastia, which is latin for “male breasts”), breast enlargement in girls, ear surgery, and liposuction.

Botox and wrinkle fillers, which are less invasive procedures have been up 99 percent since the year 2000, as facelifts remain as a major cosmetic surgery procedure for the baby boomers who are 55 years of age and older.

The ASPS figures indicated that women configured for 91 percent of those who underwent cosmetic surgery procedures, including the popular “Mommy Makeover” surgeries that involve liposuction, tummy tucks, and breast lifts. The male demographic, which consisted of the other 9 percent of procedures in 2009, experienced a 2 percent drop in surgeries than in 2008.

Other ethnic groups, such as Hispanics, experienced a 12 percent increase in cosmetic procedures in 2009, followed by African-Americans, who increased by 5 percent. However, Asian-Americans saw a 17 percent decrease in procedures.

Who is the ASPS? The ASPS is the world’s largest organization of board-certified plastic surgeons, with more than 7,000 members.

If you are considering undergoing a certain cosmetic plastic surgery procedure, it is highly recommended to consult with a board-certified surgeon.
