Greater Los Angeles Plastic Surgeons say Avoid Surgery like Heidi Montag

Added By admin on February 10th, 2010

02/10/10, Local Los Angeles area doctors say Beverly Hills plastic surgeon Dr. Frank Ryan went beyond the bounds of safe and routine cosmetic surgery practice during a recent day-long operation on “The Hills” star Heidi Montag.

Heidi Montag Plastic Surgery Before and After

The Los Angeles doctors were responding to a statement issued by Dr. Ryan in that he had performed 10 cosmetic surgery procedures on Montag, while she was under anesthesia for approximately 10 hours, while the Beverly Hills plastic surgeon operated on her for nearly seven and a half hours.

According to a blog post, Dr. Ryan said, “It is not uncommon in plastic surgery, and especially in Hollywood, to have a procedure take that long.” Only until multiple articles surfaced in various newspapers did the now popular Beverly Hills plastic surgeon Ryan comment on the situation, saying, “Ms. Montag’s procedures were not in any way unethical or unsafe.” Ryan went on to say, “Although viewers might disagree with Ms. Montag’s choices, the safety or propriety of the surgery are not and should not be in question.”

However, local greater Los Angeles area doctors have gone on to raise questions about such practice of cosmetic surgery operations in regards to the safety of all. “I do not feel it is responsible to promote the idea that nine to ten-hour long procedures are safe or routine,” said Orange County plastic surgeon Dr. John Di Saia of San Clemente and Huntington Beach, CA.

“I’m conservative, and proudly maintain a very low-risk and complication profile. Nine to ten-hour, 10-procedure marathon operations are controversial and certainly do not comprise the bulk of plastic surgery performed today.”

Newport Beach plastic surgeon Dr. Milind Ambe said he respects Dr. Ryan, but for safety in his own practice, he limits patients’ surgeries to only up to six hours under anesthesia.

“I myself have operated on numerous high-profile patients who frequently try to pressure me to do multiple procedures at once,” said Ambe. “But, I personally have made a choice NOT to exceed more than five to six hour under anesthesia for my patients.”

The Newport Beach plastic surgeon went on to say, “The risks of blood clots and circulatory blockages increase with greater lengths of anesthesia…these can be life-threatening.”

Dr. Ambe added that, “I’m sure that Heidi Montag is healthy, but other women who are also healthy may be on birth control pills and or smoke and these things increase the likelihood of blood clots and other complications significantly. ”

“Additionally, although Dr. Ryan may have an excellent anesthesiologist, not all anesthesiologists are capable of handling the fluid shifts that a patient may experience over 10 hours of anesthesia, especially when there are combinations of procedures that may incur significant blood loss.”

“I don’t do procedures this long myself,” said Newport Beach plastic surgeon Dr. Val Lambros. But he added, “Surgeons operate at different speeds and these procedures could have been done quicker or slower. Anesthesia is very safe and with cosmetic procedures the level of anesthesia is not like bigger operations.”

And just for the record, the following cosmetic procedures are what Heidi Montag underwent in one day…a Mini Brow lift, Botox injections to the forehead and frown area, a nose job revision, fat injections into her cheeks, nasolabial fold, and lips, a chin reduction, neck liposuction, ear surgery, a breast augmentation revision, liposuction on her waist, hips, inner & outer thighs, and a buttock augmentation.

Are you serious? Many would say…and the answer is yes, she went through all of that in one day. Although Heidi seems to be doing okay since her surgeries, many well-respected cosmetic plastic surgeons have publicly stated their discontent about the multiple cosmetic surgery procedures and the life-threatening risks associated with them.
