Rhinoplasty, also commonly referred to as a “nose job” is a type of cosmetic plastic surgery procedure that is used to improve the function (reconstructive surgery) or appearance (cosmetic surgery) of a person’s nose.
A Rhinoplasty can be performed in order to meet aesthetic goals of the patient or for reconstructive various purposes to correct birth defects or breathing related problems. This cosmetic procedure can be combined with other cosmetic plastic surgery procedures such as a chin augmentation in order to enhance the aesthetic results.
Rhinoplasty surgery can be performed under a general anesthetic or with a local anesthetic, depending on patient or the plastic surgeon’s preference. The Incisions are made inside the patient’s nostrils. Sometimes, tiny, inconspicuous incisions are also made on the bit of skin that separates the nostrils (columella). The plastic surgeon will first separate the soft tissues of the nose from the underlying structures, then reshapes the cartilage and bone causing the perceived deformity.
In some cases, the cosmetic plastic surgeon may end up shaping a small piece of the patient’s own cartilage or bone in order to strengthen or increase the structure of the nose. This can sometimes be done for cosmetic reasons, or it may just be done to improve breathing and the overall function of the patient’s nose.
In some rare cases, a synthetic implant must be used to reconstruct the patient’s nose if the normal structure of bone and cartilage has been badly damaged or weakened due to previous factors. Alloplastic synthetic materials can most often be associated with the long-term complications a patient may endure such as migration and extrusion. Alternatively, cartilage from the septum, ear or rib may be used in these situations.
To improve nasal breathing function, a septoplasty may be performed, with or without any cosmetic changes. The cartilage that is removed may be used as a graft to improve the appearance and overall structure of the person’s nose.
