Restylane® is the trade name for a very specific formulation of hyaluronic acid. It is composed of cross-linked long chain hyaluronic acid. Restylane is FDA approved for cosmetic injection into subdermal facial tissues.

Restylane is most commonly injected under the wrinkles and aging lines of the patient’s face such as under the nose (nasolabial folds – “smile lines”), and forehead wrinkles. This cosmetic treatment can also be used for filling age-related facial hollows under and around one’s areas surrounding the eyes. Restylane can also be used for lip augmentation, while giving the patient more plump and fuller looking lips.

Common applications of Restylane include:

* Facial contouring of one’s cheeks and mouth
* Lip augmentation and/or enhancement
* Reducing the appearance of lines around one’s mouth
* Modifying folds under the nose (nasolabial folds) and eye trough deformities

Restylane is a pretty safe and effective way of treating moderate to severe wrinkles around the areas of one’s nose and mouth. However, as it can be the case with any cosmetic procedure or treatment, there are various side effects possible. Although it is infrequent, potential side effects that can be attributed to the use of Restylane include: redness, bruising, swelling, tenderness, and moderate pain in the treated areas of one’s face. In those very few instances where side effects are arise, they typically will dissipate within a few days.

When considering a Restylane cosmetic treatment, there are a few important things you should consider before determining whether or not a cosmetic treatment, such as Restylane, is a good option for you. In determining one’s readiness for Restylane, you should:

* Have realistic expectations for what Restylane cosmetic treatments can and cannot do for you
* Be at least 18 years of age or older
* Be mentally mature enough to fully comprehend the procedure
* Be in relatively good physical and psychological health

How long will a Restylane treatment usually last for? Typically from 6 to 12 months. Although this time frame will vary amongst patients.
