Laser Skin Resurfacing

Laser Skin Resurfacing is a technique which is used during laser surgery where molecular bonds of a material are dissolved by a laser. This type of cosmetic treatment is often used in a medical context, especially in dermatology, for the treatment of acne vulgaris, scars, and spider telangiectasias, also known as “spider veins” — a symptom of ataxia telangiectasia.

It can be combined with liposuction when this is done to remove excess fat from the patient’s chin and jaw area. The person’s skin may be wrinkled after the fat is removed, but laser resurfacing can help tighten and smooth it over the new contours.

A dermatologist or qualified cosmetic professional will typically use a wand-like laser hand piece, as the patient’s undesirable skin cells and wrinkles will literally disappear into mist and are soon replaced by fresh skin cells. One of the more significant advantages of laser resurfacing over traditional techniques for skin resurfacing is that this cosmetic treatment is relatively bloodless…which is good for the patient and good for the doctor. This cosmetic procedure also offers more control in the depth of penetration of the patient’s skin’s surface, as this allows an increased degree of precision and safety in treating delicate areas of one’s skin.

What type of Skin Conditions can Laser Resurfacing treat for people?
Laser resurfacing can help to:

* Erase fine lines and wrinkles on one’s face
* Smooth and tighten the eyelid skin
* Improve crow’s feet around one’s eyes
* Soften up pucker marks and frown lines
* Remove brown spots and uneven skin color
* Improve and flatten visible and not so visible scars
* Repair smoker’s lines on one’s face
* Improve skin tones and texture

What can you expect after your Laser Resurfacing Treatment?

The treated skin areas are usually kept moist with an ointment or surgical bandages for the first few days after your laser resurfacing treatment. The skin is typically red or pink and can even be covered with a fine crust-like layer. The treated areas of the skin must be protected from sunlight (UV rays) after this type of cosmetic procedure. Once healing of the skin is completed, a high sunblock lotion should be applied. In some cases, a pink surface color may remain for several days to several months, yet this is very dependent on the patient’s skin type. Make-up can typcially be worn after about 7-14 days post laser treatment.
