Laser Scar Removal

3

Laser Scar Removal is a process where a specialized laser is moved along the scar of one’s body. This laser treatment vaporizes or removes a layer of skin and exposes a more natural-looking skin layer, which heals over time to minimize scar appearance on one’s skin surface.

The laser scar removal cosmetic procedure is often performed under local anesthesia in an outpatient cosmetic surgery center, plastic surgeon’s office, or hospital. Sometimes, general anesthesia (while one is asleep) is used. Typical time in surgery may range from a few minutes to ninety minutes or so. Patients of this cosmetic procedure typically return home during the same day.

Laser scar removal cosmetic treatments can reduce the appearance of several types of scars, including:

* Keloid Scarring, which is firm, raised and reddish/purple-like scars that extend beyond the primary area of one’s wound but grow over time.
* Hypertrophic Scarring, which is firm, raised and pin-like scars that remain within the primary area of one’s wound and typically fade over time.
* Atrophic Scarring, which is depressed pin-like pockets in one’s skin that can result from a variety of skin conditions, such as acne.

After one’s laser scar removal procedure, the patient is most often advised to wash the cosmetically treated area of the skin gently with a mild soap, pat it dry (not rub), and then apply an antibiotic ointment and a nonstick bandage to the treated areas. An antibiotic maybe offered to prevent infection by your trusted dermatologist or cosmetics professional.

Medicated creams can also help the scar fade away. Using a cool mask may also be recommended by your dermatologist. An oral medication may be suggested to treat any pain and discomfort, but you should let your doctor know immediately if the pain is intolerable to manage.

The treated skin’s regeneration process may begin as soon as three to four days after the laser treatment. The speed of skin regeneration depends on the type of laser used, your unique skin characteristics and how well you follow your trusted doctor’s advice. One can usually resume normal activities almost immediately after receiving a laser scar removal cosmetic treatment. However, your doctor will most likely suggest a follow up about six to eight weeks after your laser treatment.
