A Dermabrasion is a cosmetic medical procedure in which the surface of the skin is removed by abrasion (sanding). This cosmetic treatment is used by many dermatologists in order to remove sun-damaged skin and to remove or lessen scars and dark spots on one’s skin.
This procedure can be very painful and usually requires a general anesthetic or twilight anesthesia, in a case where the patient remains partly conscious. Afterward, the skin is very red and raw-looking, and it can take up to several months for the skin to regrow and heal. Dermabrasion is useful for scar removal when the scar is raised above the surrounding skin, but is less effective with sunken scars.
A Dermabrasion is most often used to improve the look of facial skin left scarred by either accidents or a previous surgery. It is also used to smooth out fine facial wrinkles, such as those around one’s mouth. Sometimes this cosmetic treatment can be used to remove the pre-cancerous growths called keratoses. Dermaplaning is commonly used to treat deep acne scars in one’s skin.
Both dermabrasion and dermaplaning can be performed on small areas of one’s skin or it can be done on one’s entire face. These treatments can be performed alone, or in conjunction with another procedure such as a face lift, scar removal or revision, or even a chemical peel.
