Cheek Augmentation

3

A Cheek Augmentation is a cosmetic surgery procedure that is intended to pronounce the cheekbones in a person’s face. Prominent cheekbones have long been a sign of beauty in both men and women, while being recognized across multiple cultures worldwide for thousands of years. People who want more prominent cheekbones can have an implant placed to rest on top of their cheekbones.

A patient’s trusted cosmetic plastic surgeon will usually make an incision in the upper mouth near the top of the gum line and slide the cheek implants into place. Another method that can be used, is to make an external incision near the patient’s eye, yet most patients do not prefer this method since it can create a noticable scar. However, the intraoral (inside of the mouth) approach carries a higher risk of infection since the mouth contains more bacteria.

A Cheek augmentations is usually performed under sedation or general anesthesia and take about one to two hours. The recovery time from this type of cosmetic surgery usually takes about ten days for most people.

Cheek Implants can be made up of different materials, and they may come in many different shapes and sizes, however all depends on what the patient wants, since each has their own unique situation. The most common cheek implant is solid silicone, yet there are other materials can be used as cheek implants…pending on the preference of the plastic surgeon and the patient’s agreement on all.

The second most popular material used for cheek implants is expanded polytetraflouroethylene (ePTFE). This is known to integrate pretty well with internal tissues to prevent the implant from shifting around and potentially falling out of place. Bone grafting can also be used to build up a person’s cheekbones as well as coral and other less common materials, but again, this is something that should be determined by the plastic surgeon and the patient.
