Adding some Volume to the Face can Reduce the Signs of Aging

Leading La Jolla Plastic Surgeon uses Sculptra(R) Aesthetic as a non-surgical alternative to cosmetic plastic surgery.
October 19, 2009, When it comes to aging, one’s face does not lie. Although gravity alone is not the only determinant of an aging face, some studies have indicated that the loss in volume of soft tissue and bone is at least as equally important to the aging of one’s face. From deep lines to sunken areas around the eyes, temples, nose and jowls, these can all form over time due to loss of volume in the face.
Sculptra® Aesthetic, recently approved by the FDA, is used by many cosmetic plastic surgeons as a non-invasive tool used to increase a patient’s facial volume in order to stimulate collagen production and reverse the visible signs of aging in their face.
Board certified La Jolla Cosmetic Plastic Surgeon Lori H. Saltz, says, “The basics of facial aging are that first the face deflates with volume loss and then begins to sag. Sculptra is different than the fillers that are on the aesthetic market because it actually is a volumizer that stimulates a person’s own collagen to rebuild some of the volume that is naturally lost during the aging process,” Sculptra® contains poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA) and is biocompatible with humans, meaning it will not harm your body. PLLA has been used for cosmetic purposes in Europe for the past ten years for dissolvable stitches and medical implants as well.
“At around the age of 30, collagen begins to break down and appears in the face as wrinkles, lines, deep folds and even a hollowed appearance. Other than transferring fat to these areas, until now there was really no other solution,” states Saltz. Dr. Saltz uses Sculptra in her daily practice for those patients that are not quite ready for a surgical facelift as well as an adjunct to her daily cosmetic surgeries in La Jolla, CA.
“People ask me why a plastic surgeon would be so excited about a so-called ‘liquid facelift’ and it’s simply because I am seeing the results every day and my patients are happy,” claims Dr. Saltz. She also says that when performing a traditional cosmetic surgery face lift, she will often supplement it with Sculptra injections in the temples or around the eyes of her patient. “There isn’t one magical solution for every problem we see in cosmetic surgery and it often takes a combination of procedures to give a patient the best results,” according to Saltz.
Sculptra® Aesthetic treatments typically require an average number of three injection sessions once every four to six weeks. Since Sculptra gradually replaces the lost collagen needed to restore a more natural-looking appearance in one’s face, this is reason why sessions are typically spread out over this amount of time, as clinical studies indicate the effects of Sculptra can last up to two years. As Sculptra gradually improves one’s face in between sessions, the cosmetic plastic surgeon has enough time to adjust the amount of volumizer that is needed to provide the best aesthetic results for the patient.
